Village Saiidane, Taluka Shirur

Before VCDM, we lived life as it came to us, without asking any questions. Suffering was there, it was accepted. With VCDM we became aware of our problems and injustice, and gradually the desire to fight them grew in us. We became more sensitive to others, understanding that we are only ONE, my problem is yours and vice versa.

I quickly decided to tackle the problem of drinking water. Various tools were used: demonstrations to challenge leaders, and street theater to raise awareness of the problem. The movement was spread to several talukas (administrative division) of Maharashtra. It was a real success! The work was immense … We worked alongside several groups.

Then I handled the issue of deserted women, abandoned by their husbands, issue of homeless, support less people, people living under poverty line etc. All these people suffered the same ills: lack of awareness, scientific thought process, ignorance of their rights, of their power, depreciation of themselves. Our priority was that these people regain their dignity, take possession of their destiny, their selves. It was essential that these people find their place in their village assembly and have a say, because that is where the whole village development, decision making process plays out. I also initiated micro-economic groups in several villages, borrowed and used funds to improve our agricultural productivity while remaining organic
